Narrative Theory

SYD FIELD
Field suggested that in any good film the audience is grabbed in the first ten minutes. This means the opening must be effective and interesting to entice an audience.
Field also originally suggested the three plot structure theory, revealing that typical Hollywood films can be separated in to three key parts; the set up, the confrontation and the final resolution.

ARISTOTLE
The first narrative theory to be created was Aristotles Unities. He suggested that a narrative should be created within a unity of time, place and action. The narrative should all be placed within a single location, follow the concept of real time and obey logical actions.

FREYTAG
As a 19th century dramatist and novelist, Freytag created his Dramatic Structure theory from analysis of Greek and Shakespearean drama. He suggested that all dramatic art is divided in to 5 parts. These are:
1- Exposition
2- Rising Action
3- Climax
4- Falling Action
5- Denoument/Catastrophe/Resolution

These narrative theories will influence the narrative which we create as they display what is most effective to an audience
