Genre Change
Some would argue that genres are very specific and must be conformed to very strictly. However in fact, genres are in constant change to mould with society. An example of this is the horror genre, what scared people 60 years ago would no longer scare people now.
Why does genre change?
- Technology/advances in society
- originality
- change in audience
- relatability
Steve Neale demonstrates how the progression of a genre influences how it develops.
He reveals why it could be argued that genre is in constant flux. (5 key stages)
- The form finding itself
- the classic
- stretching genre boundaries
- parody
- homage
Genre has to change to suit the current audiences and therefore must change and develop alongside our society.
